We are Tina and Alan, originally from Lancashire but with our souls deeply rooted in the Scottish Highlands. Our journey brought us to the picturesque village of Ullapool when our son Joshua was just three years old. Embraced by the stunning landscapes and welcoming community, we knew we had found our true home. Our younger son, Jordan, was born amidst these breathtaking surroundings, and both of our boys immersed themselves in the rich local culture through Gaelic Medium Education during their primary school years.

Living in Ullapool is wonderful—a place where the sea views inspire and the vibrant community thrives. Our love for this area inspired us to share it with others through Tigh na Reultan, our self-catering cottage in Ullapool. Alan, a dedicated joiner by trade, pours his craftsmanship into maintaining both our home and Tigh na Reultan, ensuring guests experience the charm of a genuine Scottish Highlands cottage rental.

Tina channels her passion into TLC + Associates, her rural consultancy that fosters community engagement and development—work that resonates deeply with the essence of Ullapool. Our adult sons are pursuing their own paths; Josh contributes to the heartbeat of the village at the Ullapool Leisure Centre, while Jordan explores his creativity studying photography in Edinburgh.

Building Dreams Amidst the Scottish Highlands
Alan, a joiner with a lifelong aspiration to build his own home, found his inspiration during a holiday in Fort William. That journey ignited our quest for a piece of land amid the breathtaking landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. We wandered through rolling hills and along rugged coastlines, exploring the enchanting realms of the Highlands and the Isle of Skye, each location whispering possibilities of new beginnings.

Our adventure led us to discover idyllic plots in Rhue near Ullapool and Braes, Ullapool. The moment we set foot in Braes, we felt an undeniable connection to the land—a sense that this was where we were meant to lay down roots. Without hesitation, we secured the purchase of the land, embracing a future intertwined with the serene beauty of the Highlands.

Originally, our plan was to retire here, allowing the tranquility of Ullapool to cradle our later years. However, life had different plans. Following the profound loss of our first child, Jacob, we found ourselves reevaluating what truly mattered. The Highlands called to us with a renewed urgency—a place of healing, reflection, and new beginnings. We chose to bring forward our Highland life, immersing ourselves in a community that offered solace and a landscape that inspired hope.
Settling in Ullapool became more than just a change of scenery; it was the realisation of a dream. Alan poured his passion and craftsmanship into renovating Tigh na Reultan—our home and a haven for travellers seeking an authentic Scottish Highlands cottage rental.

In 2005, armed with a dial-up connection and a dream, we launched Ullapool Self Catering.
